What to do right now

A few things make a hack worse. Here's what to do, and what not to do, before we get started.

  1. 1Don't delete the site or start overThe infected files tell us how they got in. Deleting them can destroy the evidence and leave the real backdoor in place.
  2. 2Don't restore an old backup yetHacks often sit unnoticed for weeks, so recent backups are usually infected too. Restoring one can hide the problem instead of fixing it.
  3. 3Change your passwords from a clean deviceChange your hosting, WordPress admin, and email passwords. If your own computer might be infected, use a different device.
  4. 4Write down what you're seeingTake screenshots of warnings and note any sites you're redirected to, and when. It helps us find the infection faster.
  5. 5Tell your hosting companyIf they've suspended the site, ask what they found. Their scan results are useful to us.
  6. 6Don't pile on security pluginsInstalling several scanners at once rarely removes the infection and can make the site harder to clean.
